"to create, i need to be pushing up against something. i need a force in opposition to me that is heavy and inert, a thing that needs energy and commitment from me to move."

gary holme | artist | designer | illustrator | director

Gary Holme has one of the most diverse and eclectic careers in the North American visual arts scene. As an accomplished artist and published illustrator, he has spent his career weaving creativity with commercial success, from controversial art shows in Bejing to the podium at advertising award shows worldwide. Holme has been an art director for some of the world's best agencies and was recently the Director of Art & Design at Mass Minority, Toronto. Gary Holme has been called many things ––– artist, cartoonist, illustrator, writer, creative director and provocateur.

He grew up in Detroit and moved to Canada in 1990. Classically trained in his youth, Holme's recent work has been more bold and transgressive than ever before. "I’m still inspired by a blank canvas, but turning something that already exists into something else is interesting. I transformed an Apple iPod billboard from the early 2000s into nine large paintings. The billboard was on the way to a landfill, but now it continues to exist in people's homes. That’s cool." says Holme.

“I made eight paintings for a group show in Beijing, China in 2016. The young Chinese gallery owners approved the sketches I sent, and everything was cool. Then I changed my mind, and painted some crazy political pieces instead. Boy, were they pissed. But those brave, rich gallery owners hung ‘em anyway––the controversial ones, not the ones below.

So now, I’m putting these out because I actually like these way more now than the other ones. And to be honest, the political ones are still being held by Chinese authorities.”

Series
Limited Edition Chinese Sea Monster Prints

Year
2016

I called these Chinese Gea-Monsters, because buried in every painting was at least one scribbled capital G. It seemed funny at the time.

I also gave them genitalia, because, well, I just did. Sometimes it’s obvious, (above). Sometimes it’s geographically incorrect and subtle.

I created eight of these at the time for the show, and four are now in private collections. The four above are being printed and are available now.

Above was originally titled ‘Salama-G. See what I did there? The originals are all 19” x 24”, and so the Limited Edition prints will be the same.

ABOVE: Original sketches sent to a Chinese Art Gallery, for approval.
